HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--RCN Corporation (NASDAQ: RCNI), a leading provider of digital television, data, and voice services to residential, business and commercial/carrier customers, announced that it has received the United Way of the National Capital Area’s New Business Partner Award for 2007/2008 for the Fairfax/Falls Church region.

“We appreciate this recognition by the United Way of the National Capital Area (UWNCA) and are pleased to have been able to help support their goal of creating a positive impact on individuals and communities through strategic giving,” said RCN Senior Vice President, Strategic External Affairs & Programming, Richard Ramlall. “We support United Way on both a national and local level because they are a proven leader in building stronger communities, bringing people and resources together to make effective, positive and lasting impact in the lives of millions of Americans in need of support.”

The New Business Partner Award was presented in recognition of RCN’s financial and volunteer support. In 2007, RCN ran its first-ever nationwide campaign with United Way. The company utilized UWNCA’s eBusiness system and coordinated a national campaign in six markets (including such locations as New York City, Pennsylvania and Chicago). With the generosity of its hard-working and kind staff, combined with a munificent $50,000 corporate gift, the organization raised nearly $150,000 nationwide during its first years combined campaign! This marks the second time in 90 days that a local United Way chapter has recognized RCN. In July, the United Way of New York named RCN as its New Business Partner of the Year.

“We are pleased to honor RCN with this award,” said Angela Woods, Interim CEO of UWNCA. “The United Way of the National Capital Area is grateful for the leadership and support that RCN has provided our community. Their support will allow us to continue addressing and responding to critical issues affecting the communities we serve.”

“RCN also encourages its employees to take part in the communities in which they work and live by volunteering their time and talents to the local United Way chapters or other favorite charities and organizations,” said RCN General Manager, Don Channell, who accepted the award at an UWNCA event this week. “As a local competitor to the telecom and cable giants, RCN feels it is important to champion and support the local communities we serve. Our goal is to be viewed by our customers as their hometown service provider – a company that cares.”

To support as many worthy programs and organizations as possible, RCN typically partners with broad-based charities such as the United Way. In 2007 and again in 2008, RCN donated annually more than $3 million in cable TV advertising time to the United Way.
