SAN RAMON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Mobile DTV Alliance announced today that Nokia Siemens Networks, one of the world’s largest telecommunications infrastructure providers, has joined the MDTVA to help speed the global deployment of mobile digital TV. Earlier this year the MDTVA broadened its scope to include multiple bearer technologies and to concentrate on harmonizing the application and service layer.

“We welcome Nokia Siemens Networks to the alliance, as the company has long been a dedicated advocate of mobile digital TV,” said Walt Tamminen, president of the MDTVA. “As one of the world’s preeminent providers of telecommunications infrastructure, Nokia Siemens Networks can only strengthen our efforts to grow mobile DTV adoption through their invaluable knowledge of mobile TV infrastructure and systems.”

MDTVA’s expanded mandate to include multiple broadcast systems like ATSC mobile/handheld and DVB satellite/handheld standards, as well as its original commitment to DVB-H, brings more market stakeholders together to help make mobile digital TV a global mass-market service.

“Nokia Siemens Networks actively participates in the development of open mobile TV standards to facilitate rapid service adoption by both operators and consumers,” said Ron Freeman, director of Mobile TV, Nokia Siemens Networks, North America. “Working with a forum like MDTVA to unify the market under a common service layer brings economic benefits to all participants and, most importantly, improves the consumer experience, which is critical to driving mobile TV services toward mass adoption.”

The MDTVA publishes the North American Mobile TV Implementation Guidelines and serves as a primary collaboration forum between companies of various industries interested in mobile TV deployments, implementations and global testing.

The three key aspects of the MDTVA’s implementation guidelines are:

  • an interoperable technical foundation that builds on the efforts of the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA);
  • support for multiple broadcast systems under a consistent service layer;
  • expanded content protection options, which support the application of a wide range of business models to many types of entertainment content.
