YoNaturals Launches Maryland School Program to Offer Healthy Vending Options
Thu Nov 20, 11:42 AMSAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Maryland schools welcome YoNaturals healthy vending as a new ally in the fight against junk food in vending machines. Participating schools including St. Bernadette’s School, St. Elizabeth School, and Montrose Christian Child Development are amongst a group of select schools to have been chosen for YoNaturals.
"YoNaturals started this program to prove that kids will eat healthy snacks and drinks, as long as they taste good," says Mark Trotter, CEO of YoNaturals Inc. "The response from school districts around the U.S. has been astounding as our healthy vending initiative has triggered widespread national interest with Maryland schools jumping onboard."
YoNaturals offers over 350 different selections of specialized product categories via its e-commerce website and specifically designed school location menus include Stacy's Pita Chips, Clif Bars, Barbara’s Bakery, Vitamin Water, Robert’s American Gourmet Pirate’s Booty, Horizon Organic Milks and other top selling brands in the natural and organic food industry. Each item selected for the machine has gone through three rigorous tests — either local nutritional standards or, in their absence, California-SB 19 guidelines; being reasonable in cost; and passing student taste tests. The California standards require that school snacks have no more than 35% of calories from fat, have no more than 10% of calories from saturated fat and be no more than 35% sugar by weight.
YoNaturals distributors provide the machines to the schools at no cost and offer sampling events in order for people to “taste test” the products; allowing the students to participate in the selection process of what goes into the machines.
“Schools’ officials are recognizing the extent of the problem of childhood obesity and teens' poor eating habits and are doing something about it,” said Trotter. “We know that is just the beginning when it comes to bringing healthier options into schools around the U.S.,” says Trotter, “but it's a step in the right direction.”
